Chamonix is livelier in the summer than the winter, with visitors from all over the world coming to take in the spectacular views and scenery, and to try the wealth of activities available. It is a good base from which to explore the area - places worth a visit include Annecy (the principal town of Haute Savoie), Geneva, Yvoire and Evian on Lake Geneva.
