Holidays in the Pays du St Bernard: Champex-LacLocated at the heart of the Alps, in Switzerland but close to both the French and Italian borders, the area known as the Pays du St Bernard - St Bernard country - is a spectacularly beautiful area with endless holiday possibilities all year round. The icon of the area is the St Bernard dog, in memory of Barry, the dog given as a gift to the Grand St Bernard Hospice over 300 years ago. During his lifetime Barry brought help to stranded travellers trying to cross the St Bernard pass, and saved over 40 lives. Champex-Lac is one of several villages and hamlets in this area. Also known as Litlle Canada, the vilage is set around a magnificent alpine lake. In summer it is the first stop of the Tour du Mont Blanc. In winter visitors can enjoy uncrowded pistes and untracked off piste in Champex's own ski area, or can venture further afield to discover the pistes of nearby Grand St Bernard and La Fouly, or Verbier, just 30 minutes' drive away.
