Ski and Summer Holidays in the Murtal Region of Austria

Situated in Styria (Steiermark), the "Green Heart of Austria", the Murtal, offers an enormous range of things to do, suitable for visits whatever the time of year.

Stretching along the River Mur, from the peaks of the Tauern mountain range to the wide plains of Aichfeld, the scenery is as diverse as the holiday activities on offer.

In summer the lush woods and meadows attract hikers, climbers, cyclists and mountain bikers. Hundreds of kilometres of cycle trails and routes lead through valleys or up to rewarding lookout points. It’s especially worth visiting the historical towns of Judenburg, Murau and Oberwölz, as well as going to the many day-trip destinations dotted about the region.

The area is also steeped in history and tradition - with several ancient monasteries and historical buildings to explore. Local museums will tell you more about the area - such as the Styrian wood museum in St Rupbrecht ob Murau for example.

In winter, the woods and meadows become the playground for snowboarders, skiers, winter hikers and touring skiers. The Murtal Ski Pass covers the six resorts in the region, offering altogether around 150km of pistes.

Throughout the year the broad spectrum of outdoor activities includes golf, horse-riding, swimming, summer tobogganing, skating and cart-racing, cross-country skiing, winter horse-riding, tobogganing and ice-skating.

The area is also perfectly placed as a starting point for further one-day excursions into Styria, Carinthia and the Province of Salzburg.

The hospitality of the people in the region is also renowned as is the local Murau beer, possibly the best in all Austria!
