Geilo is a tranquil village set halfway between Oslo and Bergen in the Hallingdal Valley, in the heart of southern Norway.
It has been attracting visitors since the late 19th century, and from 1909 when the Bergen railway line was built, the village began to grow in size and popularity. It is halfway between the 2 major cities of Oslo and Bergen.

It is also part of the Hardangervidda Plateau, northern Europe's largest mountain plateau and popular for cross country skiers.Geilo is also known as the European kite-surfing capital, having played host to the World Championships in the past.
Geilo is well suited to beginners and low intermediates. The two main ski areas are Geilohovda and Geilolia/Kikut, both situated on either side of a fjord. With its gentle, wide slopes the Geilolia is an excellent place to learn, whilst most of the skiing is in the Geilohovda area, at the foot of the Hardangervidda.
