FAQs

Where should I stay for an Ikon Pass ski holiday?

Choosing where to stay is just as important as choosing your resort. Think about how close you want to be to the lifts, whether you want to walk to restaurants and après-ski, and how easy the accommodation is to reach from the airport.
On Chalets Direct you'll find everything from apartments close to the lifts to traditional catered chalets and luxury properties. You can search by resort, group size, accommodation type and other requirements, then contact the owner or operator directly.

How is ski accommodation in Europe different from the US?

While ski accommodation in North American resorts tends to be mainly large hotels, condos, and vacation rentals, European accommodation can be more varied. There are more independent chalets and apartments, catered accommodation is much more established, weekly bookings are common, and staying in the village with easy lift or ski-bus access can be a better option than insisting on ski-in/ski-out.

The accommodation could be a family-run hotel or guesthouse, upscale apartments or chalets offering an enormous range of add-on services, comfortable chalets where breakfast, afternoon tea and dinner are provided by hosts and communal spaces are shared by all guests, or self-catered apartments which allow you to enjoy the local restaurants.

Accommodation is frequently booked direct rather than through a travel agent, so you have the opportunity to speak directly to the people who are providing your holiday - both before and during your stay. Many of these people are local experts and will have lived in the resort for years so will be able to help with ski hire, instruction, lift passes and anything else you may need.

How are European resorts different to North American resorts?

European ski resorts can be quite different from the large, purpose-built resorts common in North America. Many combine a traditional Alpine village or town with several ski areas, rather than one resort centred around a single base. Ski lifts may operate from different parts of the resort, and accommodation doesn't always need to be ski-in/ski-out. Staying in the village centre, with easy access to lifts or a local ski bus, can give you a much better choice of restaurants, shops and après-ski.

European resorts also tend to have a strong mountain-hut culture, extensive public transport and a much larger choice of independent apartments and catered chalets. Some destinations, such as Chamonix and the Dolomiti Superski area, offer access to several different ski areas, making the choice of where to stay particularly important.

If you're used to skiing in North America, it's worth researching the resort and accommodation location before booking your European Ikon Pass trip.

How is the skiing experience different in Europe compared to the United States?

Skiing in Europe can feel quite different from skiing in the United States. European ski areas are often much larger and may link several valleys, villages or individual ski areas, giving you a huge amount of terrain to explore. Many resorts are also centred around traditional Alpine towns and villages rather than purpose-built ski bases, so the experience extends beyond the mountain.

There is generally a greater emphasis on skiing between villages, stopping for lunch at mountain restaurants and enjoying the scenery and atmosphere as you go. Mountain huts and restaurants are a big part of the European ski experience, often offering a relaxed, leisurely lunch rather than a quick stop between runs.

You'll also find that accommodation, lifts and restaurants can be spread across a wider area, with local ski buses making it easy to get around without a car.

For US skiers, one of the biggest differences is the scale and variety of some European ski areas, but also the slightly less self-contained nature of the resorts. A European ski holiday is often as much about the village, food, scenery and après-ski as it is about the skiing itself.
