FAQs

What makes La Tania so special?

La Tania has long been considered one of the hidden gems of the Three Valleys. It has a relaxed, friendly atmosphere that makes visitors feel at home almost as soon as they arrive, offering a quieter alternative to some of its larger neighbours without compromising on the skiing. One of La Tania's biggest strengths is its location. Nestled between Courchevel and Méribel, it provides effortless access to both valleys, making it an excellent base for exploring the world's largest linked ski area. Whether you're heading towards the perfectly groomed pistes of Courchevel or the varied terrain around Méribel, everything feels within easy reach. The village itself is compact and convenient. Most accommodation is either ski-in, ski-out or within a short walk of the main gondola, so getting onto the mountain each morning is quick and straightforward. Instead of navigating busy streets or lengthy transfers, you can usually be skiing within minutes. La Tania also stands out for its beautiful woodland setting. Surrounded by pine forest, it has a much more traditional Alpine feel than many purpose-built resorts. After fresh snowfall, the chalets nestled amongst the trees create the classic winter scenery that many people picture when they imagine a ski holiday. The skiing is another highlight. Beginners and intermediates will find plenty of confidence-building blue and red runs close to the village, while more experienced skiers have easy access to challenging terrain across the Three Valleys. The tree-lined pistes around La Tania are especially enjoyable during snowy or low-visibility days, when they provide far better contrast and shelter than the higher alpine slopes. The Courchevel sector is also renowned for its exceptional piste grooming. Beautifully prepared runs and an extensive, modern lift network make exploring the area both enjoyable and efficient. Recent investment, including the new La Tania Gondola, has made access to the mountain even quicker, more comfortable and more reliable. Despite being part of one of the world's most famous ski areas, La Tania has managed to retain its welcoming village atmosphere. There are plenty of restaurants, bars and cafés to enjoy after skiing, yet it never feels crowded or overly commercial. Families appreciate its safe, compact layout, while groups value the combination of excellent skiing and accommodation that is often more affordable than neighbouring Courchevel 1850. For many visitors, that's what makes La Tania so special. It combines world-class skiing, easy access to the entire Three Valleys, a peaceful woodland setting and excellent value in a village that feels authentic and unpretentious. It's the sort of place people often discover almost by chance, then find themselves returning to year after year.

Is La Tania good for families?

La Tania is an excellent choice for a family ski holiday.

La Tania is an excellent choice for a family ski holiday. While it may not have the extensive facilities of some of the larger resorts, its biggest advantage is how easy and stress-free everything feels. When you're travelling with children, convenience matters, and La Tania gets the basics right.

The village is wonderfully compact, making it easy to get from your accommodation to the slopes each morning. Much of the accommodation is within a short walk of the main gondola, and many chalets and apartments are ski-in, ski-out. Families don't have to contend with long walks carrying equipment, complicated transport or busy town centres, which makes a real difference over the course of a week's holiday.

For children learning to ski, the beginner areas are close to the village and there are several excellent ski schools to choose from, including ESF and a number of well-regarded independent schools. Group lessons and private tuition are both widely available, giving families plenty of flexibility depending on their children's age and confidence.

One of La Tania's greatest strengths is that families with different skiing abilities can all enjoy the holiday together. Beginners can build confidence on the local slopes while more experienced skiers head off to explore Courchevel, Méribel and the wider Three Valleys, with convenient meeting points for lunch or at the end of the day.

Older children and teenagers also appreciate the freedom that comes with such a compact resort. As their confidence grows, they can explore further afield with parents or older siblings, while the village itself remains easy to navigate and reassuringly straightforward to find their way around.

Away from the slopes, La Tania has a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere that's ideal for families. There are cafés for warming up over a hot chocolate, family-friendly restaurants and plenty of opportunities for children to enjoy playing in the snow. If you'd like a break from skiing, nearby Courchevel offers additional activities including the Aquamotion aquatic centre, ice skating, tobogganing and climbing facilities.

Another reason families return year after year is that La Tania never feels overwhelming. The village is peaceful, easy to get around and largely free from the bustle found in some of the larger resorts, creating a safe and relaxed environment where parents can focus on enjoying their holiday rather than managing logistics.

Overall, La Tania combines world-class skiing with the kind of compact, welcoming village that's ideal for families. With excellent ski schools, easy access to the Three Valleys and a relaxed atmosphere, it's a resort where everyone—from first-time skiers to experienced parents—can enjoy the mountains together.

Is La Tania good for beginners?

if you're learning to ski for the first time, La Tania is a great place to choose. It often gets overlooked because it's smaller than its neighbours, Courchevel and Méribel, but that's actually one of its biggest strengths. It feels relaxed, easy to get around and much less intimidating than some of the larger resorts.
When you're learning, the last thing you want is a stressful start to the day. In La Tania, most accommodation is only a short walk from the main lift and ski school meeting points, while many chalets are ski-in, ski-out. That means less time carrying skis and more time learning.
The beginner slopes are close to the village and are designed to build confidence gradually. You won't be rushed onto terrain that's beyond your ability, and because the slopes are wide and beautifully groomed every night, they're a pleasure to learn on. Once you've mastered the basics, it's easy to move onto gentle green and blue runs towards Courchevel Le Praz, Courchevel Village (1550) and some of the easier routes leading towards Méribel. Before you know it, you're exploring the Three Valleys rather than just staying on the nursery slope.
There are several excellent ski schools to choose from. ESF La Tania is the largest and offers children's group lessons, adult beginner groups and private tuition. It's a great choice if you're looking for plenty of lesson times and lots of experience teaching complete beginners.
If you prefer smaller groups, New Generation Ski School has an excellent reputation with English-speaking visitors. Their instructors are known for making lessons enjoyable and helping nervous skiers relax, which can make a huge difference during your first few days on snow.
Supreme Ski School is another popular choice, offering private coaching and small group lessons with a strong emphasis on building confidence. Many beginners like the more personal approach, particularly adults returning to skiing after many years away.
You'll also find Momentum Snowsports, whose instructors specialise in personalised tuition for adults, children and families. They focus on helping skiers progress at their own pace rather than simply ticking boxes, and they're particularly popular with guests looking for individual attention.
Whether you choose group lessons or private tuition, you'll be in safe hands. Every instructor understands that learning isn't just about technique—it's about helping people feel comfortable, relaxed and confident enough to enjoy themselves.
If you're travelling with family or friends who already ski, La Tania works brilliantly. They can disappear into the wider Three Valleys while you're having your lesson, then meet you later for lunch or spend the afternoon skiing some of the easier runs together. It means everyone enjoys their own day without feeling separated.
One thing we know is that guests often arrive convinced they'll never get the hang of skiing. Then, be patient and somewhere around the third or fourth day, everything suddenly clicks. They're linking turns, smiling all the way down the mountain and wondering why they were ever worried in the first place.
Many of the chalet owners and local operators on Chalets Direct know the instructors personally and are always happy to recommend the ski school that best suits your family, your confidence level or the type of holiday you're hoping for.
If you're nervous about learning, don't be. La Tania is one of those resorts that quietly helps you fall in love with skiing. It's friendly, convenient and welcoming, and by the end of the week there's every chance you'll already be planning your next trip.

Is La Tania good for advanced skiers?

La Tania may be one of the smaller resorts in the Three Valleys, but once you've stepped onto the lifts you're connected to one of the largest and most varied ski areas anywhere in the world.
For advanced skiers, La Tania is brilliantly positioned. Within a few lifts you can be skiing the legendary terrain above Courchevel 1850, heading across towards Méribel, or setting yourself the challenge of covering huge distances through the Three Valleys in a single day. Many experienced skiers happily clock up 50 to 80 kilometres without repeating too many runs.
On the Courchevel side you'll find some fantastic reds and blacks. The famous Jean Blanc is a real favourite. It's a long black run that drops through the trees towards Le Praz, mixing steeper pitches with narrower sections that keeping you alert If you've never skied it before, it's definitely one to tick off during your holiday.
For something more demanding and the conditions are right, head towards Saulire where you'll find the steep Grand Couloir, one of the best-known black runs in the Alps. Accessed through a narrow entrance at the top, it's not for everyone, but if you enjoy challenging terrain it's an unforgettable descent. Nearby, Combe de Saulire and Suisses offer more sustained, technical skiing with plenty of variation.
The Méribel side has a different feel altogether. Long reds such as Mauduit, and Combe Tougnète are fantastic for opening up and Bartavelle bumps can be some challenge. There are plenty of quieter routes if you prefer covering ground rather than hunting out the steepest slopes.
One of the pleasures of staying in La Tania is that you can choose a completely different itinerary each day. One morning you might head towards Courchevel for steep, perfectly manicured pistes, while the next you could spend exploring Méribel's terrain or continue further into Les Menuires and Val Thorens.
When fresh snow arrives there are some excellent off-piste routes around Saulire, the Courchevel bowls and throughout the Three Valleys. However, this is serious mountain terrain and should always be treated with the utmost respect. Avalanche conditions can change quickly, even after what looks like a perfect bluebird morning.
That's why many experienced skiers hire a qualified mountain guide or ski instructor for at least a day. It's one of the best investments you can make. Local guides know where the best snow is likely to be, which areas are skiing well and, most importantly, where it's safe to go. They'll find the best snow, less known routes and fresh powder when available that most visitors would never discover on their own.
Another thing advanced skiers appreciate is the standard of piste preparation. The Courchevel sector has a reputation for some of the finest grooming in the Alps, so if you enjoy early morning carving, you'll struggle to find better conditions.
Many of the chalet owners on Chalets Direct are passionate skiers themselves and are always happy to point guests towards their favourite runs, recommend a local guide or suggest a route that makes the most of the day's snow and weather.
For advanced skiers, La Tania offers something rather special. You get the relaxed atmosphere of a smaller village, but with easy access to world-class terrain. Whether you're looking for steep blacks, long cruising reds, hidden tree runs or fresh powder, you'll never be short of new places to check out.

Which are the most popular ski schools in La Tania?

The biggest and best-known school is School Ski Français Courchevel La Tania. ESF and offers lessons for every age and ability. Their Piou Piou Club is ideal for young children, while adults can choose from beginner groups, intermediate coaching, private lessons, snowboard tuition and even freeride and off-piste sessions.
Many English-speaking visitors choose New Generation Ski and Snowboard School. They have an excellent reputation for small group lessons and friendly instructors who make learning enjoyable rather than intimidating. They offer children's groups, adult beginners, private coaching and performance clinics for stronger skiers.
Oxygen School Ski & Snowboard School La Tania is another popular choice, particularly with families. They offer group lessons, private tuition, snowboard coaching and guiding, and are known for helping nervous beginners quickly gain confidence.
Momentum Snowsports specialises in private lessons, family groups, technical coaching and guided skiing. They're particularly popular with experienced skiers wanting to improve technique or discover more of the Three Valleys with a local instructor.
You'll also find excellent independent schools such as Ski Progression, SnowLimits Ski School and The Snow School, all offering private lessons and coaching in English. Many returning guests choose these schools because they enjoy the smaller groups and continuity of having the same instructor each year.
As a rough guide, group lessons usually cost around €250-€380 for six half-days, while private lessons generally start from around €80-€120 per hour, with half-day and full-day options available. Prices vary depending on the time of year and the size of your group.
If you're visiting during Christmas, New Year or the February school holidays, it's well worth booking as early as possible. The most popular instructors and lesson times are often reserved months in advance, particularly for children's groups.
For advanced skiers, it's worth considering hiring an instructor or mountain guide for a day. They'll not only help refine your technique but also introduce you to quieter parts of the Three Valleys, show you where to find the best snow
One of the benefits of booking through Chalets Direct is that many of our chalet owners know these ski schools personally. If you're not sure which one would suit your family or your skiing, just ask. They'll usually have a recommendation based on years of welcoming guests to La Tania.

What are the ski hire options in La Tania?

You'll find several excellent shops, including Sport 2000 Ski Higher, Skiset Ski Wave, Intersport and Skimium Ski Legend. Because there are several shops competing for your business, the standard of service is generally excellent and the equipment is kept up to date.
Most shops stock the latest skis and snowboards from leading brands such as Rossignol, Head, Salomon, Atomic, Dynastar, Nordica and Volkl, with equipment suited to beginners, intermediate skiers, advanced piste skiers and off-piste enthusiasts.
Do not underestimate the importance of ski boots. The right pair of boots can make your week so much more enjoyable. If they don't feel quite right after your first morning on the slopes, don't just put up with them. Go back to the shop and ask for an adjustment or even a different pair. Good ski shops expect this, and they'll be far happier helping you than seeing you spend the week in pain.
If fresh snow comes in and you fancy trying something wider, with more float or would like to test different skis during the week, most shops are very accommodating.
Several shops also offer equipment delivery to your chalet or apartment, which is particularly useful if you're travelling with children or arriving late in the day. Instead of carrying skis across the village, your equipment is brought to you, fitted in the comfort of your accommodation and, in many cases, collected again at the end of your holiday.
If you've booked through Chalets Direct, it's worth asking your chalet owner which shop they recommend. Many have worked with the same local businesses for years and know who's particularly good with beginners, families or experienced skiers looking for premium equipment.

Which is the nearest airport to La Tania?

Chambéry Airport is the closest airport to La Tania, with a transfer time of around 1½ to 2 hours in normal winter conditions. However, because it has a relatively limited flight schedule, many visitors choose to fly elsewhere.

Geneva Airport is the most popular option thanks to its excellent choice of international flights from the UK, Ireland and across Europe. The transfer to La Tania typically takes 2½ to 3 hours, although journeys can be longer on busy Saturdays during the ski season.

Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport is another excellent choice, offering a wide range of year-round international flights. The transfer usually takes around 2 to 2½ hours, making it a convenient alternative to Geneva.

Grenoble Airport also serves many winter ski flights, particularly charter services, with transfer times of around 2 to 2½ hours.

Whichever airport you choose, it's worth booking your transfer well in advance if you're travelling during peak weeks such as Christmas, New Year or the February half-term holidays, as services can fill up quickly. Whether you travel by shared shuttle, private transfer or hire car, all four airports provide straightforward access to La Tania.

What are the transfer options for La Tania?

If you're flying into Geneva, Chambéry, Lyon or Grenoble, the most popular choice is to book a ski transfer. Companies such as Ben's Bus, Alps2Alps, Mountain Drop-offs, Cool Bus, SnowDrone, AlpyBus, Ski-Lifts and Mountain Rescue Transfer all operate regular services throughout the winter.
A shared transfer is ideal if you're travelling alone or as a couple. You'll travel with other skiers heading to nearby resorts, and it's usually the most economical option. A private transfer is often the best choice for families or groups. Your driver will normally meet you in the airport arrivals hall, help with your luggage and ski bags, and take you directly to your accommodation without any extra stops.
As a guide, transfer times are around: Chambéry: 1½ to 2 hours Lyon: 2 to 2½ hours Grenoble: 2 to 2½ hours Geneva: 2½ to 3 hours If you're travelling on a Saturday during Christmas, New Year or February half-term, it's worth allowing extra time as the roads into the Tarentaise Valley can become busy.
If you're flying from the USA or Canada, many visitors arrive into Paris Charles de Gaulle. From there, the TGV to Moûtiers is a comfortable option, followed by a short 20 to 30-minute taxi or transfer up to La Tania.
Our advice is to book your transfer as early as you book your flights. The best departure times often fill up during the busiest weeks, and booking ahead usually gives you the widest choice and the best prices.
A few simple things can also make the journey more enjoyable. Keep a bottle of water and a snack in your hand luggage, especially if you've had an early flight, and have your transfer confirmation easily accessible when you land. Most transfer companies are very organised, and your driver will usually be waiting with a name board in the arrivals area, making it easy to find them.
If you've booked through Chalets Direct, don't forget to ask your chalet owner or local operator for recommendations. Many work with the same transfer companies every season and can often suggest the most reliable service for your arrival time or even help arrange your booking.

Can I travel to La Tania by train?

Yes. Travelling to La Tania by train is a convenient and increasingly popular option, particularly if you're travelling from the UK or elsewhere in Europe. While there isn't a railway station in the village itself, the nearest station is Moûtiers Salins Brides-les-Bains, which serves the Three Valleys ski area.

During the winter season, Moûtiers is well connected by high-speed TGV services from Paris, with additional direct and seasonal services from other French cities. If you're travelling from the UK, you can usually take the Eurostar to Paris and connect onto a TGV to Moûtiers, although direct ski train services vary from year to year, so it's worth checking the latest schedules before you travel.

From Moûtiers, La Tania is around 20 to 30 minutes away by road. Regular buses operate during the ski season, and taxis and private transfers are also readily available. Many visitors choose to pre-book an airport or station transfer, particularly if they're arriving with lots of luggage or ski equipment.

Travelling by train can be a relaxed and scenic way to reach the Alps. It avoids winter driving, allows you to enjoy the journey through the French countryside, and can be a more environmentally friendly alternative to flying.

If you're planning your journey, it's worth booking both train tickets and onward transfers as early as possible, especially during Christmas, New Year, the February half-term holidays and other busy weeks, when services can sell out well in advance.
